Gun and engine modules often interchange with mediums, so grinding both US heavy and medium line simultaneously isn't a bad idea. This is especially true for M6 and M103, both of which are weak with dealing with getting shot at from multiple angles. Therefore, when playing US heavies it is important to keep your armor forward facing priority targets and incoming fire, but to also limit your exposure and firing angles towards you. US heavy tanks are more of the same playstyle as mediums, but they also get better front armor at the cost of weaker sides.

Being flexible is the key trait to successfully play US mediums IMO. Starting from M2 Medium and the M4 Sherman you should learn to use your turret armor as much as possible, with perhaps exception to M3 Lee (non-turreted) and T20 (no mantlet, insufficient turret armor for its tier, and low DPM for the 90mm gun forcing you to take cover to avoid getting shot while you reload anyway). M3 Lee is a bit of an exception to this principle, but it does have good enough mobility it is harder to circle than non-turretted TDs, good enough armor to block Tier IV guns or lower, and a gun with sufficient penetration, damage, and ROF. They have enough mobility, decent firepower and pen, and OK armor, but doesn't excel in any one of them except using its turret armor in hull-down positions.
